Knowing AI Isn't Enough for Job Seekers.  Employers Want Applicants Who Know Business.

NEW YORK — In a wide-ranging July 2026 analysis of hiring companies spanning numerous industries, KAS Placement has uncovered key findings about AI in U.S. hiring going into 2027.

Based on an extensive analysis of recent hiring conversations, from interviews to strategy discussions, KAS Placement is seeing employers increasingly assess whether candidates can cogently apply AI use to achieve tangible business outcomes, rather than simply understanding the different research or design capabilities of popular LLM platforms.

The findings draw on a proprietary dataset spanning the full hiring cycle including incoming employer hiring requests, strategy calls with hiring leaders, candidate interview transcripts, and completed placements.

The research consistently shows that while AI is an increasingly common element in many non-technical job descriptions and interview processes, experience using LLMs at work is not what employers are actually asking for.

When Lewisco, a leading NYC food distribution company came to KAS Placement, they needed someone who understood their corporate objectives and could integrate AI to enhance productivity, shipments and sales efficiency.

The candidate they hired was the one who clearly conveyed how she could align AI implementation to ensure sales could focus more on client interactions, the firm better understand client needs, shipping trends and more.  All of these were key aspects that were perceived as valuable to the growing organization.

“It’s clear that AI by itself isn’t enough,” says Ken Sundheim, founder of KAS Placement. "In commercially focused roles, candidates increasingly set themselves apart by connecting their ideas for AI to measurable business value.  Things like revenue growth, faster execution, and more reliable customer acquisition."

Sundheim says that going into 2027, job seekers should be increasingly prepared to discuss concrete ways they can use AI in a given position to achieve those overarching business outcomes.  “At this point,” he shares, “Almost anyone can create a punchy image.  The candidates who stand out can create a business case for why that specific image, and what it will achieve.”
